I have really been struggling with contentment. Ever since we moved to Virginia and moved in with my parents, it has been really easy to slip into self-pity, why-me mode.
Phil. 4:11
"Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:"
1 Tim. 6:8
"And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content."
Heb. 13:5
"[Let your] conduct [be] without covetousness; [be] content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.'"
That verse from Hebrews says it all.
No, we do not have our own place.
Yes, we only have one car.
Etc., etc., etc.
But we have Jesus. What else is there?
So that is my fervent prayer these days; I want Jesus to be everything to me. I want to be content with Him and nothing else.

I'm gonna be praying that right with you. You're absolutely right. When things happen in your life that you know are going to put you in a place that's better than where you started, but in the mean time, just suck so hard, its easy to get bitter and mopey. I'm so there. You're awesome.
